| QUESTION |
Why use a mediator? |
| |
ANSWER |
A mediator is trained to assist people to have controlled conversations they have not been able to do on their own. He or she is trained to be a neutral party. The mediator may not provide advice or help you make decisions in any way. Even when mediators know of resolutions not seen by either party, they are not allowed to present these to you, the court or any other authority. What the mediator does provide is the opportunity for each party to voice their concerns, how the issue is affecting each one, The mediator gives each person a chance to tell their perspective, share their concerns, be heard, and pose questions to each other. The decision on what is done next (continue mediation, go to court or come to a mutual decision) is made by the parties involved, not the mediator.
